I want to hook up my old Precision Power amp(1400w RMS @ 4ohms bridge) to two JL 12w3 (300w rms) subwoofers. If I set my amp gain carefully, will still I run a risk of blowing up the subs? If the gain is set very low, will the amp still send 1400 watts to the subwoofers and damage them?
That is NOT what a gain control is. You will overpower those subs.
The purpose of the gain is to match the signal volts RMS form the HU with the amp to supply the correct RMS watts to the subs, nothing else.

Nope, your gain nob is basically an ampage nob. Your totally fine, hook them up with the gain ALL THE WAY DOWN!!! then ease it very slowly up till you hear the music distort and turn it down about a qaurter turn. If you notice the distortion come back soon after, turn it down a bit more on the amp just to be safe. You'll know if your about to blow your speakers if you do it like this, I suggest fadeing the sound only to them for a while so you can really here whats going on for a few days after you hook them up. To be on the safe side you know. Don't go to radio shack, they rip you off. I've been hooking up car stereos for about 4 years now. Lots of fun.
